The winner of the overall best essay award this year was Brianne Perkins from Three Peaks Elementary. One of the goals of these essays is to provide an opportunity to the fourth grader to get to know an ancestor. The essay must be in the fourth grader’s own words about an ancestor who lived at least two generations back from the student. Each year the local Cedar City chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers sponsors an essay contest for fourth graders in the schools in Cedar City and Enoch. It takes hundreds of volunteers and around 4,000 volunteer hours to make the event happen.įunds raised from the Jamboree, as well as the Cedar City Rotary Club’s other events, support projects and organizations that include the Veterans Memorial Park, Iron County Care and Share, Canyon Creek Services, Cedar City Music Arts, the Happy Factory, Little League Baseball, the Southwest Livestock Show, the SUU Childcare Center, and scholarships for both SUU and Southwest Tech students, to name a few. The Jamboree is organized by the Cedar City Rotary Club with help from sponsors and volunteers from across the community.
